Our wine tonight is the Valvin Muscat from Fireclay Cellars in Siler City, North Carolina.

Valvin Muscat is a hybrid grape developed at Cornell University.

Vintage 2017.

Yadkin Valley AVA.

Light straw in color.

Nose of wildflower honey, peach cobbler, orange blossom, and freshly cut grass.

Semi-sweet to sweet, but not Moscato sweet.

Exhibits a nice full mouth feel.

Complex flavor profile with notes of fresh apricot, sweeten peach slices with cream, lemon meringue pie, pear, orange peel, star fruit, and pineapple.

Lingering lemon-lime finish.

12% ABV.

Bright beautiful salmon in color.

Nose of apricots, almonds, dates, and fresh herbs.

Dry, balanced, and delicate in mouth feel.

Flavor notes of fresh sliced pears, strawberries, cherries, lime, tangerines, and pink grapefruit.

12.3% ABV.

White Merlot – Brandon Hills Vineyard

Our wine tonight is the White Merlot from Brandon Hills Vineyard in North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley.

Vintage 2012.

Pale orange in color.

Processed of 100% Yadkin Valley AVA grown Merlot grapes.

Nose of grapefruit, orange, cranberry, and strawberry.

Mild tannins.

Semi-sweet. 3.5% residual sugar.

Flavor notes of cherry pie, strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, guava, and bananas foster.

12.5% ABV.

We recently picked up this one and a second bottle at the winery and saw even more recently they had opened the very last case of this vintage.

White Merlot is looked down on in the wine “snob” industry, Placed in the same category as White Zinfandel, and perhaps in the past rightfully so.

However, this Yadkin Valley AVA vintage is undoubtably a cut above. We’ve enjoyed bottles of this vintage for a few years now and it’s still drinking well. We’re saddened to realize that we are down to most likely the very last bottle we’ll ever enjoy of this vintage.

1. Blanc du Bois – Hinnant Family Vineyards

Hinnant Family Vineyards

Pine Level, NC

Dry, 12% ABV. $13 a bottle

Pale yellow in color

Nose of grapefruit, lemon, butterscotch, and honeysuckle.

Flavor notes of grapefruit, green apples, pineapple, and bananas foster finishing with hints of lemon and wildflower honey and a certain dull minerality.

Flavor profile similar to a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.

2. Fig Orange Mead – Honeygirl Meadery

Durham, NC

Beautiful golden color 12% ABV.

Roasted locally sourced figs fermented with NC wildflower honey

A Melomel is a Mead that contains fruit…either fermented with or infused after fermentation.

Nose of honey, fig, caramel, and butterscotch.

Bold Flavor Notes of honey, orange slices, caramel, and Fig.

Bronze medal in Finger Lakes Int’l Wine Competition.

Pair with a nice charcuterie plate.

3. Côte-Soleil Syrah – Elkin Creek Vineyard

Right outside of Elkin—-Yadkin Valley AVA

Côte-Soleil Syrah 2016

Syrah blended with 12% Viognier

12.5% ABV

Dark inky in color with a short purple rim.

Big nose of over ripe blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, raisins, dried fruits, cedar, vanilla, spices, espresso, cola, vinaigrette, graphite, smoke.

Full bodied, big and bold, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and extremely fruity on the palate with prunes, blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, raisins, vanilla, cedar, black licorice, cloves, tobacco, dark chocolate, mocha, coffee, peppercorn, and graphite.

Long finish with fine tannins with notes of chocolate covered cherries.

This is a delicious Syrah blend from the Yadkin Valley AVA. Fruit forward with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel. A great sipping wine.

Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up (60 minutes). We actually decanted for 2 hours.

Still young and will continue to mature in the bottle.

2008 Chambourcin – Misty Creek Vineyards

Tonight we dusted off a bottle of 2008 estate Chambourcin from Misty Creek Vineyards in Mocksville, North Carolina.

100% produced of estate grown Chambourcin in North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley AVA.

Lightly aged in Hungarian oak.

Beautiful color of violet.

Nose of chocolate covered cherries, pluff mud, and sarsaparilla.

Light residual sugar. Off dry.

Mild tannins with flavor notes of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, tart raspberries, blueberries, currants, finishing with lingering hints of graphite and smokiness.

12.5% ABV.

$23 a bottle.

This is a really nice drinking #NCWine. We aerated it lightly prior to enjoying.

2017 Riesling – Fish Hippie

Our wine tonight is the 2017 Riesling with the Fish Hippie branding of Old North State Winery.

Light straw in color.

A delicate floral nose with hints of apricot and lemon zest.

Off dry.

Flavor notes of tart green apple slices, lime juice, apricots, and pears, finishing with a bit of nuttiness.

12.5% ABV

Spiker Dude – Slightly Askew Winery

Our wine tonight is Spiker Dude from Slightly Askew Winery In Elkin, North Carolina. Slightly Askew claims to be “not your average winery” and produces a lot of unique and interesting wines.

Lime infused Pinot Grigio.

Light golden color with a slight green hue.

Nose of lime and citrus.

Sweet on the tongue with notes of lime, coconut, pink grapefruit, mint, and lemon tart, and finishing like a coconut creme puff.

Fresh easy sipping summer wine.

9% ABV.

Peach Grape Wine – Menarick

Our wine tonight, in celebration of Chardonnay day, is the Peach Grape Wine from Menarick Vineyard and Winery in North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley AVA.

Pale yellow in color.

Chardonnay infused with real peaches.

Nose very expressive of fresh sliced peaches.

Semi-sweet.

Flavor notes of buttery Chardonnay on the tongue, mid-palate classic butteriness, butterscotch, and fresh baked lemon meringue pie, finishing with big notes of biting into a fresh picked ripe peach.

9% ABV

$21 per bottle.

Riesling. – Shelton Vineyards

Our wine tonight is the 2017 Riesling from Shelton Vineyards in North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley AVA.

Light straw in color.

Nose of Fuji Apple, Bosc Pear, lemon juice, and apricots.

Semi-sweet, 3% RS.

Flavor notes of fresh baked apples, sliced pears, honeysuckle, lemon, apricots, pineapple, and finishing with delicate notes of ginger.

12.75% ABV

$15 a bottle.

This vintage won gold in the 2018 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition.
