Prunus Private Selection – Gota Wines

Our wine tonight is the 2016 Dão Prunus Private Selection.

Vintage 2016.

Red blend of 80% Jaen, 10% Tinta Roriz, 5% Alfrocheiro, and 5% other varietals.

Dão, Portugal wine region.

Aged six months in French Oak and six months in the bottle.

Dark garnet color.

Nose of plum, blackberry, rose petals, light oak and vanilla.

Recommend decanting for 60 minutes.

Medium bodied, dry with modest acidity.

Flavor notes of chocolate covered cherries, raspberries, cinnamon, smoke, black pepper, plum, and oak.

13% ABV.

This is a really nice drinking red blend for under $15 a bottle.

Holiday Red – Burntshirt Vineyards

Our wine tonight is the Holiday Red from Burntshirt Vineyards in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Blend of Chambourcin and Cabernet Franc.

Crest of the Blue Ridge Henderson County AVA.

Non-Vintage.

Though we did buy this bottle during the 2018 Christmas season.

Beautiful dark ruby color with a bright garnet rim.

Nose of chocolate covered cherries, fresh brewed Colombian coffee, pomegranate, and clove.

Off dry, medium bodied, with subtle tannins.

Nutty on the palate, with depths of red plum, strawberry, bell pepper, cinnamon, vanilla, all spice, oak, mint, and gingerbread cookies.

13% ABV

Cork and Pork – Rock of Ages Winery

Our wine tonight is the Cork & Pork wine from Rock of Ages Winery.

Red blend of dry vanifera and sweet muscadine grapes.

Dark plum in color with a bright purple rim.

Muscadine on the nose, hints of cheap cigar, red currants, and cherry cola.

This red blend is sweet!

Served chilled.

Bold on the palate, chewy, notes of red and black currants, blackberry jam, fresh baked cherry pie, plums, cranberries, and raisins. Oaky on the back end with a lingering vanilla finish.

Absolutely one of the most unusual wines we have tasted. Not bad just unusual.

13.1% ABV

$14 a bottle.

Blended to pair with pork BBQ.

Tempranillo 2017 – Carlos Serres

Our wine tonight is the Rioja Old Vines Tempranillo 2017 from Carlos Serres.

Vintage 2017.

100% Tempranillo of Rioja Spain.

Dull Ruby in Color.

Dry, Medium Bodied.

Long Distintive Legs.

Nose of Fresh Tobacco, Cherry, Vanilla, Almond, and Oak.

Bold Flavor Tones of Red Licorice, Cherry, and Raspberry, Finishing with Blackberry , Plum, Oak and Walnuts.

13% ABV.

$15 a Bottle.

Decanted for 60 Minutes.

Total Score: 13.5 Silver Medal Worthy.

I think this wine too young and should age another three plus years.

Mosaic – Kefi Estate Winery

Our wine tonight is the Mosaic from Kefi Estate Winery in Monroe, North Carolina.

Blend of estate grown Greek varietals Aglianico, Negro Amaro, Mavron, and Nebbiolo.

Deep purple in color.

Long distinctive legs.

Nose of fresh rose blooms, anise, red plums, red currants, and black licorice.

Dry. Chewy.

Flavor notes of red cherries, raspberries, black licorice, peanut butter cups, and cranberries finishing with lingering profiles of leather, and tobacco.

12.5% ABV.

Rustic Red – Wellborn Winery

Our wine tonight is the Rustic Red from Wellborn Winery in Travelers Rest, South Carolina.

Produced of locally grown Chambourchin.

Non- vintage.

Light ruby in color.

Nose of fresh baked blueberry muffins, raspberries, passion fruit, dark cherries and the forest after a morning mist.

Semi-sweet.

Flavor notes of tart raspberries, red currants, boysenberries, and a fresh hot cherry turnover, slight smokiness on the finish with a lingering tartness of a Christmas fruitcake.

12% ABV

This wine is racking up awards.

Gold medal winner in the 2019 Wine of the South Competition. Silver medal winner in the 2018 Palmetto Wine Competition.

Corot Noir – Midnight Magdalena Vineyards

Our wine tonight is the Corot Noir from Midnight Magdalena Vineyards.

Vintage 2017

100% Estate Grown Corot Noir.

North Carolina’s Swan Creek AVA.

Developed at Cornell in 1970, Corot Noir is a hybrid of Seyve Villard and Steuben.

Gorgeous dark ruby in color.

Decant for one hour to open.

Very fruit forward nose of Bing Cherries, Red Plums, and Blackberries.

Medium bodied, soft tannins, dry.

Flavor notes of ripe cherries, blueberries, red currants, and plum, softly fading to earthy and mineral tones.

12% ABV.

Queen – St Paul Mountain Vineyards

Our wine tonight is the Queen from St. Paul Mountain Vineyards.

Sweet Red blend, 80% Cabernet Franc.

Aged 6 months in oak.

Expressive red plums, blackberries, cherry cola, and fresh vanilla bean on the nose.

Flavor notes of overripe blackberries, figs, fresh baked cherry pie right out of the oven, black currants, red currants, raspberries, freshly ground dark coffee beans, and rich mocha, while finishing with hints of tobacco leaf and smoke.

13% ABV

Montepluciano D’abruzzo – Citra

Our wine tonight is the Montepluciano D’abruzzo from Citra.

100% Montepluciano.

Dark purple in color, long legs.

Nose of dark over ripe wild berries.

Off dry, ripe morello cherries on the tongue transitioning to notes of cigar box, toast, and black pepper with chewy tannins and bright acidity.

13% ABV

Aged in stainless steel tanks

$7 a bottle

Enjoying this one at the bar of one of our favorite restaurants, I didn’t feel the environment conducive to scoring.
