Semi-sweet with elderberry fruit notes on the front of the palate with more subtle notes of blueberries, red grapes, honeysuckle, grapefruit, and kumquats. The lingering finish is true to a Wildflower Honey mead.

Caramel Apple Cyser – Wandering Bard Meadery

Our wine tonight is the Caramel Apple Cyser from Wandering Bard Meadery in Greenville, South Carolina.

A Cyser is a combination mead and cider.

Honey and Apple Juice fermented together.

Color of light gold.

Nose of honey and caramel.

Semi-Sweet.

On the tongue the sweetness of the locally sourced wildflower honey is balanced by the lingering tartness of biting into a fresh county fair caramel apple!

The bottle notes carmalized South Carolina sourced wildflower honey blended with Carolina apple cider with added spices for extra flavor.

Recommended serving temperature @ 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

8% ABV.

Honey Apple Wine – Fireclay Cellars

Our wine tonight is the Honey Apple Wine from Fireclay Cellars in Siler City (Raleigh area), North Carolina.

Honey? Apple? Wine?

Mead is fermented of honey, often referred to as Honey Wine.

Cider is fermented of apple juice.

A Cyser is a fermented blend of Honey and Apple juice.

Metheglins are spiced ciders.

This complex wine is produced from a blend of honey and North Carolina apple juice, and spiced with cinnamon and cloves.

Vintage 2017.

Beautifully light amber in color.

Nose expressive of honey and cloves.

On the tongue prevalent of honey, mid palate notes of cinnamon and other spices, with a crisp apple finish.

13% ABV.

Honeyed Peach – Starlight Meadery

Our wine tonight is tonight is a mead, Honeyed Peach from Starlight Meadery in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

Style of Melomel Mead.

A Melomel is a style of Mead with fruit added to enhance the flavor.

Orange-Yellow in color.

Nose more reminiscent of a peach cobbler and wildflower honey.

Serve chilled.

Semi-sweet.

Slightly effervescent.

Honey is prevalent on the tongue, the finish like biting into fresh juicy peach.

12.5% ABV

When judging Melomel Meads we want the honey to remain noticeable along with the fruit flavors.

Starlight Meadery’s Honeyed Peach is a solid example and we’d score this one a Silver Medal.

Black Cherry Mead – Lazy Bear Wine

Our wine tonight is the Black Cherry Mead from Lazy Bear Winery in Easley, South Carolina.

Rust in color with a garnet rim.

Still not sparkling.

Nose of honey, cherry and almonds.

Dry on the palate with bitter sweet notes of black cherry and wildflower honey.

Finishes like a traditional mead.

A prime example of melomel mead.

12% ABV

This mead is smooth drinking, would pair well with Mexican food.

This is good. Really good. I would grade as gold medal worthy.

I’m quickly a huge fan of Lazy Bear Winery.

Unfortunately only available at the small production winery and meadery.

These guys use honey and fruit from their own property or either source very locally.

They continue to rack up some impressive competition medals for their products.

We strongly recommend a visit.

Our wine tonight is the Masala from World’s Edge Meadery in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Mead infused with natural Chai Tea flavor.

Color of polished gold.

Prominent nose of chai tea with hints of wildflower honey.

Flavor notes of sweet honey, cinnamon, clove, cardamom, nutmeg, cumin, and vanilla.

11% ABV

$20 per bottle.

Serve chilled.

Pair with soft cheeses or carrot cake.

Oaked Black Cherry – Wandering Bard Meadery

Our wine tonight is the award winning Oaked Black Cherry from Wandering Bard Meadery In Mauldin, South Carolina.

Stunning light ruby in color.

Still. Semi-Sweet. Melomel type mead.

Aromas of smoke, oak, and juicy fruit gum.

Flavor notes of honey, black cherries, rum, Charcoal, fading to a finish of medium oak and vanilla.

Aged on toasted American oak.

12% ABV.

This is an easy drinking mead bursting with flavor.

Hinnant Family Vineyards

Pine Level, NC

Dry, 12% ABV. $13 a bottle

Pale yellow in color

Nose of grapefruit, lemon, butterscotch, and honeysuckle.

Flavor notes of grapefruit, green apples, pineapple, and bananas foster finishing with hints of lemon and wildflower honey and a certain dull minerality.

Flavor profile similar to a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.

2. Fig Orange Mead – Honeygirl Meadery

Durham, NC

Beautiful golden color 12% ABV.

Roasted locally sourced figs fermented with NC wildflower honey

A Melomel is a Mead that contains fruit…either fermented with or infused after fermentation.

Nose of honey, fig, caramel, and butterscotch.

Bold Flavor Notes of honey, orange slices, caramel, and Fig.

Bronze medal in Finger Lakes Int’l Wine Competition.

Pair with a nice charcuterie plate.

3. Côte-Soleil Syrah – Elkin Creek Vineyard

Right outside of Elkin—-Yadkin Valley AVA

Côte-Soleil Syrah 2016

Syrah blended with 12% Viognier

12.5% ABV

Dark inky in color with a short purple rim.

Big nose of over ripe blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, raisins, dried fruits, cedar, vanilla, spices, espresso, cola, vinaigrette, graphite, smoke.

Full bodied, big and bold, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and extremely fruity on the palate with prunes, blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, raisins, vanilla, cedar, black licorice, cloves, tobacco, dark chocolate, mocha, coffee, peppercorn, and graphite.

Long finish with fine tannins with notes of chocolate covered cherries.

This is a delicious Syrah blend from the Yadkin Valley AVA. Fruit forward with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel. A great sipping wine.

Good right out of the bottle and better as it opens up (60 minutes). We actually decanted for 2 hours.

Still young and will continue to mature in the bottle.
