Bearly Sweet Red – Serenity Cellars

Our wine tonight is the Bearly Sweet Red from Serenity Cellers in Cleveland, Georgia.

Red White blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Traminette.

The Cabernet Sauvignon and the Sangiovese are Estate grown. The Traminette is local to North Georgia.

Non-vintage, but this is a young wine. We aerated but did not decant. Served very slightly chilled.

Labeled as Georgia table wine, no ABV is listed. We estimate the alcohol level at about 11-12%.

Bright ruby in color. Medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate tannins.

Expressive fruit forward nose and balanced bouquet. Sweet on the tongue, more so than barely yet not cloyingly sweet. Flavor profile of ripe dark fruits, with prominent notes of blueberries and black plums. Lingering finish with peppery and subtle nutty tones.

Owner and winemaker Joe Smith is an icon in the North Georgia wine region. He’s the guy everyone turns to for assistance and Joe is currently mentoring other upcoming winemakers in the region.

The winemakers descriptor suggest this wine pears well with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We’ll just take his word for that.

Granda – Baker Buffalo Creek Vineyard.

Our wine tonight is the Granda from Baker Buffalo Creek Vineyard.

Red blend of estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Chambourcin.

Fermented in French Oak Barrels.

Burgundy in color.

Intensely fruit forward on the nose, off dry with mild tannins. Flavor notes of black cherries, red plums, blackberries, and red licorice. Finishing long with subtle earthy and nutty tones.

A really nice easy drinking red blend.

12.5% ABV

Baker Buffalo Creek Vineyard is rooted on a 100 plus year old dairy farm. The soil is fertile and rich in nutrients and not over farmed. Originally planted in 2003, much of those original vines remain.

Bearly Sweet Rosé – Serenity Cellars

Our wine tonight is the Bearly Sweet Rosé from Serenity Cellars in North Georgia.

Blend of estate grown Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon combined with Traminette.

Vintage 2019.

Nose of strawberries, freshly sliced strawberries! A little cinnamon, tart cherries, cedar, and spice.

Light copper in color with orange hues.

Semi-sweet and medium bodied on the palate with notes of strawberries, raspberries, sweet cherries, and cloves, and most definitely cream soda on the finish with hints of blood orange.

Labeled as table wine with no ABV. Therefore by law this wine can range between 7 and 14 percent ABV. We estimate approximately 11% ABV.

Owner and Winemaker Joe Smith is one of the more established winemakers in the North Georgia wine region. Joe continues to assist as the winemaker for several other North Georgia wineries. He is well respected in the region and has up and coming winemakers learning as apprentice under his tutelage.

Our wine tonight is the 2014 Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon from Piccione Vineyards in North Carolina.

We opened this bottle in celebration of OTBN North Carolina.

Gorgeous dark ruby color with a bright purple rim

Expressive bouquet of dark fruits, blackberries Black Cherries, Caramel, Truffles, and Mint.

Full bodied with strong tannins and showing beautiful long legs

Dry on the palate with complex flavor notes of Black Currents, Black Cherries, Dark Roasted Coffee, Chocolate Covered Cherries, Vanilla Latte, Pipe Tobacco and Mint, with a lingering finish of Eucalyptus and Burgundy Truffles.

13% ABV

Loco Lulu – Parker-Binns Vineyard

Our wine tonight is the Loco Lulu from Parker-Binns Vineyard in the Tryon Foothills wine region of Western North Carolina.

Loco Lulu – Soft Red Blend

Non-vintage on the bottle, though we believe this to be of the 2018 harvest.

Classic Bordeaux blend of estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Dark purple in color with a bright garnet rim.

Nose expressive of fresh Bing cherries, think of a freshly baked hot out of the oven cherry pie, cocoa, soft florals, cinnamon, vanilla, and smoke.

We aerated for 60 minutes.

Medium bodied, medium tannins, with beautiful cascading long legs.

Flavor notes of black currants, blackberries, cherries, red plums, and spice, finishing toward more subtle notes of cedar, vanilla, black pepper, and pipe tobacco.

$12.8% ABV

Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon – Hindsight

Our wine tonight is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon of Bella Vetta Vineyard in the Howell Mountain AVA from Hindsight Vineyards.

Vintage 2015.

Single vineyard.

Bella Vetta Vineyard, Howell Mountain, Napa Valley.

Howell Mountain is one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious AVA’s.

Vibrant deep purple in color.

Will benefit from decanting.

Nose of blackberry, dark cherry, and cigar box.

Dry on the palate, full bodied with robust tannins but smooth as opposed to bold and chewy.

Flavor notes of black cherry, black currants, blueberry, cocoa, black pepper, tobacco, and leather, with a oaky savory finish.

14.7% ABV.

$90 a bottle.

We’d score this Cab Sauv as a gold medal wine.

It may not be the best Cab Sauv we’ve ever enjoyed, though it’s certainly very good.

Les Cailloux Bordeaux 2018

Our wine tonight is the Les Cailloux Bordeaux Rouge 2018.

Dark ruby in color with a soft purple rim.

Red wine from Bordeaux, France.

Blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Some decanting recommended.

Nose of cherries, plum, vanilla, and smoke.

Dry with medium plus body and medium plus tannins.

Flavor notes of black currents, red plums, cherry cola, cocoa, vanilla flavoring, with a lingering oak finish.

12% ABV.

We really enjoyed this fruit forward Bordeaux blend. Drinking well now.

Cuveé Richeaume – Domaine Richeaume

Our wine tonight is the 2016 Cuvée Richeaume from Domaine Richeaume in France.

Dark ruby in color with a purple rim.

Red Provence wine.

Expressive nose of cedar, damp forest leaves, tobacco, black tea, black licorice, and earthy spices.

Blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Syrah, 8% Merlot, 3% Carignan.

Richeaume Vineyard on the red flanks of Cézanne’s beloved Mt. Saints Victoire.

Dry on the palate.

Flavor notes of black currents, cloves, black cherries, plums, espresso, vanilla flavoring, coffee liqueur, and finishing bold with hints of leather, chewing tobacco, bitter herbs and earthy spices.

Decanting recommended.

14.5% ABV.

Francis Coppola – Claret

Our wine tonight is the Francis Coppola Diamond Collection 2016 Black Label Claret. A California red blend dominate of Cabernet Sauvignon also featuring Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc.

Drinking fine now, may age moderately. Needs to breath, open up for 60 minutes.

Nose of cherry, mocha, and vanilla

Nicely balanced, medium bodied.

Complex flavor notes of oak, molasses, smoke, tobacco, and pepper opening up to hints of blackberry, raspberry, currant, and spice fading to a lingering finish of vanilla.

Winery Escapade scoring on the American Wine Society twenty point scale.
